This book made such a difference in my son's handwriting March 4, 2007 Katy Held (Ann Arbor, MI USA) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
This book has been a godsend to me (and my son). He struggled with his printing in first grade; when he would pick up the pencil to practice I could see his little body start to tense up. I felt so badly for him. I took a 2 day course by Isabel Cohen based on this book, and I started using her techniques with my son for his handwriting practice. It made a great difference in his writing, but more importantly to me, he stopped tensing up every time he picked up a pencil. There are great charts for both printing and cursive in the book, and it even gives you the proper words to say to your child as you teach them.
I also used her techniques to help my son with spelling, and for a boy with ADHD and a brain injury, he has a 92% spelling average - not too shabby.
I highly recommend this book, and also highly recommend taking a workshop from her if you can. [...]
Really glad I found this! July 21, 2007 Tanya Katzenellenbogen 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I was looking for printed materials about Brain Gym and came across the Hands On Photo Manual. I was particularly impressed with the layout as it helped me to understand how and when one uses Brain Gym with kids and the pictures clearly illustrated the variations with minimal written instruction. This is a truly parent-friendly book!

I found Hands On to go one step beyond Brain Gym, Teacher's Edition. Hands On brings eye movements into the Brain Gym exercises and offers many variations for the movements. I was especially impressed with the alphabet 8's used to teach printing and cursive writing. I would recommend this book to all classroom teachers.

I work as an occupational therapist and I have always had trouble with finding a way to present brain gym to a teacher that is easy to implement. This book offers some really good ideas.
Easy to use January 15, 2007 Teacher 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Take the time to read the book first (at least the first half) before actually introducing it to the kids. I believe it works, and if it doesn't, just explaining how it will help the students makes them think it's working in their body. (Placebo effect?) I've had them start centering themselves when we line up in the classroom before we join the other elementary classrooms because once out there, a lot of self control is required. Our line is always the straightest, quietest and most controlled.
